Care Instructions for Wrestling Uniforms

Wrestling gear absorbs sweat, mat sanitizer, blood, headgear ear chafe, and the residue of every weight cut from October to March. Cotton-blend rinses out gently. The 92/8 poly-spandex on a Hamco singlet handles tougher chemistry, but smart laundry habits still matter:

• Mat sanitizer and chlorhexidine residue: Many mat-cleaning solutions oxidize cotton over time. Polyester sublimation handles weekly mat-cleaner exposure, but rinse the singlet inside a sink with cold water within two hours of the workout if it absorbed a heavy spill from a leaky bottle.
• Blood stains from mat burn or nose bleeds: Cold water rinse within 24 hours, never hot water (hot sets the iron in blood permanently into polyester). Hydrogen peroxide on a cotton swab lifts old blood without bleaching the sublimation underneath.
• Headgear ear-chafe sweat: The shoulder yoke of the singlet collects the sweat that wicks down the headgear strap. Pre-treat the upper shoulder zone before every wash. A thirty-second cold-water spot rinse breaks up the salt residue that hot dryer cycles otherwise bake into the fabric.
• Weight-cut sauna-suit interactions: Wrestlers cutting hard through sauna suits sometimes wear the singlet underneath the plastic. The trapped heat is not gentle on stretch fibers. After a heavy cut session, give the singlet a cold rinse and lay flat to dry before machine washing.
• Wash cycle: Cold water, inside out, mild detergent, gentle cycle. No bleach, no fabric softener, no dryer sheets. Fabric softener coats the moisture-wicking fibers and kills the wicking.
• Drying: Hang dry or tumble on low. Hot dryer cycles shrink the leg opening over time and shorten the elastic-waistband life on warmup pants by months.
• Storage between tournaments: Fully dry before bagging. A damp singlet sealed in a gear bag for two days grows mildew that no wash fully recovers.

Sublimated dye is locked into the fiber, not sitting on the surface like screen print. Sublimated numbers and school names are dyed into the fabric, so there is no print layer to crack or peel. Coaches who pay attention to spec sheets ask the right questions. Here is what is actually inside a Hamco wrestling singlet, fight short, and sideline piece:

• Competition singlet: 220 to 240 GSM 92/8 poly-spandex compression knit. Opaque at full stretch under LED arena lighting (verified opacity test at every QC pass). Flatlock seams at the shoulder, leg opening, and inseam to eliminate raised interior ridges that dig into skin during ground work.
• Compression short (under singlet): 180 GSM stretch interlock. Inseam fit that does not bunch when worn under the singlet. Same fabric used across the youth bantam and adult heavyweight size run.

• Decoration method: Full sublimation on the singlet, compression top, compression short, and fight short. Sublimation plus embroidered chest crest on the cotton-fleece sideline pieces. No screen print on the singlet: it can crack where the leg opening stretches.

Sublimation locks the dye into the polyester fiber. The shoulder yoke and leg-opening reinforcement are positioned where actual wrestling stress happens, which is why the pattern matters more than the brand label.
