Practice shorts are the loose short for in-room drilling and live goes. Compression shorts are the form-fitted poly-spandex base layer worn skin-tight under the singlet (and the top of a two-piece competition set). Use training shorts for running and lifting off the mat; use compression shorts under the singlet for competition. They layer together — compression underneath, training short over.
