Care Instructions for Rugby Uniforms

Rugby kit absorbs mud, grass stains, blood, sweat, and the deep funk that develops when a match jersey sits in a club bag overnight. Polyester sublimation handles tougher chemistry than cotton, but smart laundry habits still matter:

• Mud and grass from rucks: Rinse the jersey under cold tap water before tossing in the laundry basket. Pre-treat the chest, shoulder, and seat zones with a 50/50 cold water and white vinegar soak for fifteen minutes. Hot water sets the chlorophyll into polyester fiber.
• Blood stains from rucks and tackles: Cold water rinse within 24 hours, never hot water (hot sets the iron in blood permanently into polyester). Hydrogen peroxide on a cotton swab lifts old blood without bleaching the sublimation underneath.
• Scrum-grind on the shoulder yoke: The hooker and props take the most shoulder grind. Pre-treat the shoulder yoke before every wash with an enzymatic spray.
• Sevens tournament rapid wear: Sevens tournaments run 5 to 6 matches in a single weekend. Each match jersey gets one fast cold-water hand rinse between matches if possible, and a full machine wash after the tournament.
• Wash cycle: Cold water, inside out, mild detergent, gentle cycle. No bleach (bleach destroys sublimation). No fabric softener (softener coats wicking fibers and kills the wicking).
• Drying: Hang dry preferred. Tumble on low if needed. Hot dryer cycles shrink the match jersey at the chest measurement over time and shorten waistband life on the shorts.
• Storage between matches: Fully dry before bagging. A damp match jersey sealed in a kit bag for two days grows mildew that no wash fully recovers.

Sublimated dye is locked into the polyester fiber, not sitting on the surface like screen print. Sublimated crests, hoop stripes, sponsor placements, and back numbers are dyed into the fabric, so there is no print layer to crack or peel.

• Practice jersey: About 150 GSM polyester, lighter than match weight.
• Classic rugby shorts: About 210 GSM polyester. Reinforced double-stitched seams at the inseam, outseam, and waistband. Traditional rugby cut (longer than soccer/football shorts).
• Striped band shorts: Same fabric weight as the classic shorts, with a sublimated stripe band at the waistband, traditional club design.

• Training shorts & compression shorts: Lighter shorts for conditioning runs and gym work. Compression shorts.

• Rain jacket: Water-resistant shell.

Sublimation locks the dye into the polyester fiber.

• Sponsor placement (Premiership-style multi-sponsor norm): Chest center, chest left, sleeve, back panel, shorts hip, shorts seat.
• Number and name placement: Back numbers sized for referee and crowd visibility, sublimated or twill. Last name above the back number on senior club and college programs. Sleeve numbers optional at the college level.

• Sublimation art: Unlimited colors, gradients, photo-realistic art, and patterns. Sublimation is dye-into-fiber, so complex art does not cost more per piece.
