Match-day soccer shorts run a slightly heavier ~160 GSM fabric with the structured construction needed for 90-minute weekly use across a full season. Beyond fabric weight, match shorts also support tackle twill player numbers on the leg at the USSF-aligned visibility standard that referees check at kickoff; training shorts don't carry tackle twill on the lightweight fabric. Tackle twill is the raised stitched-on twill used for game-day player numbers — built for once-a-week match visibility. On lightweight ~150 GSM training fabric the twill adds rigidity that the lighter short doesn't carry well, and it's overkill on a product designed to absorb 4-5 sessions per week of sprint, set-piece, and direction-change work. Sublimation handles training-shorts numbering perfectly — the dye is part of the fabric, doesn't add rigidity, doesn't catch on equipment, and survives the wash cadence that training-shorts use demands. Layering depends on session conditions and player preference. Compression shorts underneath add quad and hamstring compression for explosive sprint work, provide contact protection during scrimmages with physical play, and add a thermal base layer for cold-field training sessions. Many players run compression shorts under training shorts year-round because the under-layer prevents chafing during long sessions and keeps the training short hanging cleanly without bunching. For sub-30°F outdoor sessions the compression-under-training combination is the standard layering pattern.
