Below ~30°F most programs run the short-sleeve under a long-sleeve under a quarter-zip — the layering combination that lets players strip down as the session intensity builds. Many clubs order both the short-sleeve and long-sleeve in the same design file so the kit reads identical across all temperature conditions.

The training shirt is built for practice volume, not match-day use. The fabric is ~150 GSM moisture-wicking polyester optimized for absorbing 4-5 sessions per week and surviving the wash cadence that comes with that — daily or near-daily laundering. Match jerseys run ~160 GSM and ship with the structured construction needed for once-a-week 90-minute use across a full season. Beyond the fabric difference, match jerseys also support tackle twill numbers at the USSF 8-inch back-number minimum that referees check at kickoff; training shirts don't carry that decoration. Tackle twill is the raised stitched-on twill that anchors back numbers on match jerseys — built for once-a-week game-day visibility that referees can read from the touchline. On lightweight ~150 GSM training fabric the twill adds rigidity that the lighter shirt doesn't carry well, and it's overkill on a product designed to absorb 4-5 sessions per week of sprint and direction-change work. Sublimation handles back numbers on training shirts perfectly — the dye is part of the fabric, doesn't add rigidity, doesn't catch on training equipment, and survives the wash cadence that training-shirt use demands.
