Three jobs at once. (1) Chafe prevention: the poly-spandex 4-way stretch knit and flatlock seams sit smooth against skin so the rigid foam edges of shoulder pads, elbow pads, rib pads, and breezer waistbands don't rub raw spots through a 60-minute game. (2) Moisture management: the moisture-wicking finish pulls sweat off skin and into the knit where it can evaporate through the gaps between pad panels, rather than pooling against skin and waterlogging the pad foam. (3) Warmth retention: rinks run cold (typically 50-60°F ice surface temperature) and the compression knit traps a thin layer of warm air against the body without adding the bulk of a sweatshirt under pads. Anti-odor antimicrobial treatment built into the fabric extends fresh-wear cycles between washes — important when full-pad gear gets sweat-soaked every session.

Two reasons, both substrate-driven. (1) Stretch failure: tackle twill is sewn onto fabric as a patch. On a 4-way stretch knit that flexes every direction with every stride, the twill patch and the surrounding stitching crack and pucker after repeated stretch cycles — the twill stays rigid while the knit moves around it. (2) Under-pad chafe: embroidery thread sits raised above the fabric surface. Under shoulder-pad strap pressure or rib-pad compression, raised thread bunches and digs into skin within the first few shifts. Sublimation solves both: the color becomes part of the fiber itself with no surface bump, no chafe, no stretch failure mode. Screen printing works in low-pad-pressure zones (chest center, upper sleeve) where the ink layer doesn't catch under pad straps.
