A softball uniform consists of a numbered jersey and matching pants, plus socks, a belt for belt-loop pants, and a cap or visor. Players add sliding shorts underneath. Hamco Sports supplies the jersey and pants as one softball uniform set.

What does a softball uniform consist of?

A softball uniform is what the whole team wears alike, plus the layers each player wears under it. Hamco Sports supplies the top half of this table. Players usually buy the rest.

Piece What players call it Who usually supplies it On a Hamco Sports order?
Jersey Game jersey: V-neck, racerback, round neck, sleeveless, 2-button, full-button or long sleeve Team order Yes
Pants Softball pants: standard, full-length or knickers Team order Yes, alone or with the jersey as a set
Game shorts Shorts Team order, where the league allows them Yes, as a separate piece
Socks Crew or knee-high socks Team order Yes, crew and knee-high
Visor Visor Team order or player Yes, adjustable, in youth and adult sizes
Cap Ball cap Team or player, separately Not on our softball list
Belt Belt Player, or the team separately Not on our softball list
Sliding shorts Sliders Player Not on our softball list
Undershirt, arm and leg sleeves Base layer, compression sleeves Player Not on our softball list; see the color rule below
Batting helmet, cleats, glove Equipment Player or team Not part of the uniform

For a 14-player high school roster, the team order holds 14 jerseys, 14 pairs of pants, 14 pairs of socks and 14 visors. Each family buys a belt, sliding shorts and, for cold early-season games, an undershirt in the layer color the team picks.

What are softball pants called, and which styles do teams wear?

Most players simply call them softball pants. Hamco Sports lists three styles: standard pants, full-length pants and knickers, which stop below the knee and show the sock.

Our softball game pants have belt loops and reinforced knees, so add a belt to each player’s shopping list. For how softball pants differ from baseball pants in fit and rise, see our baseball vs softball pants guide.

What are the high school rules for the jersey and numbers?

High school softball follows the NFHS uniform rules unless your state association says otherwise. Each jersey rule shapes a decision you make before the mockup.

The rule (NFHS) What it means for your order
Every player’s uniform must be the same color and style. One design for the whole roster. A high school team can’t mix pants and shorts.
State associations may let a player wear a different style for religious reasons or bad weather. Ask your state association; it decides player by player.
Sleeve length can differ between players, but each player’s two sleeves must be about the same length, and not ragged, frayed or slit. A player can’t cut one sleeve short for a throwing arm.
A back number is required, at least 6 inches high, in one solid color that contrasts with the jersey. A contrasting border up to ¼ inch is allowed. A navy number with a gold border no wider than ¼ inch on a white jersey works. A number printed as a color fade is not one solid color.
No two players on a team may wear the same number, and 0 and 00 count as the same number. If your shortstop wears 0, nobody else can take 00.
No dangerous or reflective buttons or ornaments on the uniform. Keep reflective buttons and ornaments off the design.

The NFHS guide requires a back number only; it sets no rule for a front number.

Do undershirts and sliding shorts have to match?

Exposed undershirts must match every other player’s undershirt. Exposed sliding shorts must match every other player’s sliding shorts. Neither has to match the jersey. The NFHS counts any exposed undershirt or sliding shorts as part of the uniform once they show.

  • Every exposed layer must be one solid color: black, white, gray or a school color.
  • All exposed tops must be the same color across the team, and so must all exposed bottoms.
  • A player’s top and bottom layers don’t have to match each other.
  • Arm sleeves, leg sleeves and tights are allowed, under the same color rule.

Take a team in navy jerseys. Every player in a black undershirt and gray sliding shorts is legal. Two players in white undershirts and one in navy is not, even if both are school colors, because the tops no longer match. Send families the team’s layer colors in writing before anyone shops.

What can players wear on their heads, and what can’t pitchers wear?

Caps and visors can be mixed on one high school team, and pitchers have their own rule.

  • Headwear: caps and visors may be mixed, in white, black, beige or school colors. Players don’t have to match each other, and the logo can be any color. Plastic visors and bandannas are not allowed.
  • Pitchers: nothing on the pitching hand, wrist, arm or thighs that the umpire judges distracting to the batter. A play-card wristband goes on the non-pitching arm, in one solid color that isn’t optic yellow.
  • Jewelry: not banned in NFHS softball, though umpires can still rule on items that distract or add risk.
  • Cleats: metal cleats and toe plates are allowed.

So your outfielders can wear team visors while your shortstop wears a cap, and the umpire has nothing to call. Our visors adjust to fit, with youth and adult sizes in one order.

What changes for high school uniforms on January 1, 2027?

From January 1, 2027, a high school softball uniform may carry only the player’s name, the school name or nickname, the school mascot and/or the school logo. A design you approve this winter will be worn under that rule in spring 2027. The required back number and the flag, patch and maker’s logo limits below are separate rules in the same guide.

Two related limits sit next to it in the NFHS guide:

  • Maker’s logo: one per item (jersey, pants or shorts, visible undergarments, socks, caps), no bigger than 2¼ square inches, with no side over 2¼ inches.
  • Flag and patch: one US flag up to 2 × 3 inches on each item, and one commemorative or memorial patch on the jersey, up to 4 square inches with written state association approval, as long as neither blocks the number.

In practice, a booster sponsor’s name across the back or a season slogan on the sleeve no longer fits a high school uniform. Tell your designer the uniform is for a high school team, so the mockup shows only school marks. For design ideas inside those limits, see our softball team uniform ideas.

The NFHS 2027 softball rules changes (July 2026) add no other player-uniform rule. Source: the NFHS Softball Uniforms guide and the NFHS softball rules page, checked October 25, 2026.

Do slow-pitch and rec teams follow the same rules?

Not always. Many rec, travel and adult leagues play USA Softball rules or their own. One example: USA Softball lets a team wear long pants, shorts or a mix if they are alike in color. A high school team must all wear the same style (NFHS rule comparison sheet, January 2026). Our guide to what slow-pitch softball players wear covers what USA Softball, USSSA and SSUSA each require.

Softball jerseys come in a men’s cut and a women’s cut, and a coed team orders both cuts in one order, at the same price.

Ordering the uniform for your team

A Hamco Sports softball uniform set is a jersey plus matching pants (V-neck or racerback). The set saves money versus buying the pieces separately. See the per-player prices on our softball uniforms page. Your uniforms are designed in the USA, made overseas in our own factory.

Sublimated softball jerseys are 140 to 160 GSM performance mesh. Jerseys with tackle twill lettering use a slightly thicker 160 to 180 GSM fabric to carry the sewn letters. Pants are 220 GSM performance polyester.

  • Names and numbers: sublimated names, numbers and logos are included in the per-player price. Tackle twill lettering is $5 per name and $5 per number.
  • Sizes: youth sizes cost the same as adult sizes, and custom sizing is available for all teams.

Math for your timing: uniforms are ready 2 to 3 weeks after design approval, then take 3 to 5 days to reach you. Count the long end of each and add a week of margin: 21 + 5 + 7 = 33 days, so approve the mockup at least 5 weeks before your first game.

Put your whole roster on one order. Many coaches come to us after a late order or a slow reply somewhere else, so we start with your first game date. There is no minimum order. You get a free mockup within 12 hours, and we change it as many times as you need. Nothing goes into production until you approve it. A real person replies within 1 hour during business hours (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm ET).

The price we quote is the price you pay, with no setup fee and no extra charge for bigger sizes. Shipping is free anywhere in the USA. Canadian teams pay the shipping. We pay the tariffs, duties and import fees on US and Canada orders. Schools: purchase orders accepted. Get My Free Quote

Frequently asked questions

Can a softball team mix pants and shorts?

Not in high school. The NFHS requires the same color and style for every player, so the team wears all pants or all shorts. USA Softball allows a mix if they are alike in color. Rec and travel leagues follow their own rule book, so check yours before you order.

What’s a good softball jersey number?

Any number works as long as no teammate has it and it meets the back-number size and color rule. In high school softball, 0 and 00 count as the same number, so only one player can wear either. Write each number next to the player’s name on your roster before you ask for the mockup.

Does the team buy the belts and sliding shorts?

Usually the players buy them. Neither is on our softball list. Sliding shorts matter to the rules only when they show. Then all exposed bottoms on the team must be one solid color: black, white, gray or a school color.

Can a high school softball uniform carry a sponsor’s name?

Not from January 1, 2027. From that date a high school softball uniform may carry only the player’s name, the school name or nickname, the school mascot and/or the school logo. So a booster sponsor’s name across the back no longer fits. Rec and travel leagues follow their own rule book.

How early should we order softball uniforms?

Approve your design at least 5 weeks before your first game. Uniforms are ready 2 to 3 weeks after design approval, then take 3 to 5 days to reach you. Add a week of margin and that’s 33 days. Hamco Sports sends a free mockup within 12 hours, so leave a few days for changes before that approval date.
