Quick Answer
A legal girls flag football uniform is a numbered jersey, shorts with no pockets, belt loops, or exposed drawstrings, and a three flag belt that contrasts with the shorts. Under NFHS rules nothing may cover the belt. Tucking the jersey is the safe choice, and Georgia requires it. Sets run about $55 to $101 per player depending on vendor and order size. Georgia also requires soft headgear with a 5 star Virginia Tech rating from fall 2026.
Girls flag football grew from 15,716 high school players in 2021/22 to 102,360 in 2025/26. It is now a top 10 girls sport, according to the NFHS participation survey. Most of those teams are buying girls flag football uniforms for the first time. This guide covers what a legal uniform is and how girls and women’s sizing differs. It also covers what girls flag football jerseys and shorts cost in 2026, and the mistakes that get players pulled off the field. If you want the growth story and the college pathway, read our girls flag football guide first.
Two things up front. This is the girls and women’s guide, so the rules here are the NFHS girls rules and the college rules, not youth rec. For the head to toe list that any flag team needs, our flag football uniforms and outfits guide covers it. And we sell flag uniforms, so every Hamco price below comes from a product page you can open. Competitor prices come from their published pages.
What Are the Uniform Rules for Girls Flag Football in 2026/27?
The NFHS wrote its first flag football rules book for 2025/26 and updated it for 2026/27. The rules book is sold, not posted free, but the NFHS shares its 2026/27 rules changes and a rules presentation that state associations post. The 2026/27 NFHS flag football rules presentation on the Alaska association’s site quotes the uniform rules below.
- Shorts, pants, or skirts: no pockets of any type, no exposed drawstrings, no belts, no belt loops. One single solid color that clearly contrasts with the flags (Rule 1.5.1d).
- Flag belt: three flags, one on each hip and one at the tailbone, each at least 1.5 inches wide and 14 inches long. Flags are one solid color. No school or manufacturer logo on the flags or belt (Rule 1.5.1f).
- Coverage: no clothing and no hair may cover the flag or belt. This is a 2026/27 point of emphasis, so officials are told to watch for it.
- Tooth and mouth protector: it may not carry attachments that do not protect the teeth or mouth (Rule 1.5.1c).
- Eye shade: solid stroke only. Words, numbers, logos, or symbols in eye black are illegal (Rule 1.5.3c).
- Penalty for an illegal flag or flag belt: 10 yards from the previous spot and disqualification of the head coach (Rule 9.8).
Your state can adopt its own options. Georgia is one example. The 2026 GHSA girls flag football rules book requires front numbers at least 6 inches tall and back numbers at least 8 inches. Jerseys must be long enough to stay tucked for the whole down. A mouthpiece is required. New for fall 2026, every player must wear soft shell protective headgear or a protective headband, and it must carry a 5 star safety rating from the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab, per the GHSA approved headgear requirement page. Local news reports that a team with players not wearing approved headgear is flagged 10 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Virginia Tech flag football headgear ratings list the models that pass. Georgia also allows one logo of up to 2.5 by 2.5 inches on a flag. Ask your state office for its adoption sheet before you approve a mockup.
Youth rec leagues under NFL FLAG rules are simpler. NFL FLAG asks for shorts without pockets so the belt stays visible, bans metal cleats, and lists the mouthguard as the only protective gear. If your girls play both school and NFL FLAG seasons, build the uniform to the stricter NFHS list and it will pass both. Our flag football rules explained guide walks through the 5v5, 7v7, and NFL FLAG differences.
| Item | NFHS 2026/27 (most states) | GHSA 2026 (Georgia) | NFL FLAG (youth rec) |
|---|---|---|---|

| Shorts | No pockets, no exposed drawstrings, no belt loops, one solid color | No pockets, belt loops, belts, or exposed drawstrings; different color from flags | No pockets |
| Flags | 3 flags, 1.5 by 14 in minimum, one solid color, no logos | 3 flags on a quick release belt, one color, up to one 2.5 in logo | Belt with flags on each side |
| Mouthguard | Rule 1.5.1c; no attachments that do not protect the mouth | Required | Required, the only protective gear |
| Headgear | Not in the free NFHS documents; check your state | Required from fall 2026: soft shell headgear or headband with a Virginia Tech 5 star rating | Not required |
| Cleats | Not in the free NFHS documents; check your state | Studs up to 0.5 in, no metal | No metal cleats |
Girls vs Women’s vs Unisex Cut: Which Sizing Chart Should You Use?
Most flag jerseys are sold on a unisex chart, which is a men’s chart with a different label. A women’s chart is different in one clear way: the hip measurement is larger than the chest. On a men’s chart, chest and hip are the same number. That gap is why a unisex medium fits a girl at the shoulders but pulls at the hips. It is also why the hem rides up over the belt on a run.
Hamco’s flag football product pages carry three charts, men’s, women’s, and youth, and the women’s chart is the one with hips larger than chest. Here it is from our custom flag football jerseys page. The same chart applies to the shorts and the sets.
| Women’s size | Chest (inches) | Waist (inches) | Hip (inches) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 30 to 32 | 24 to 26 | 33 to 35 |
| S | 33 to 35 | 27 to 29 | 36 to 38 |
| M | 36 to 38 | 30 to 32 | 39 to 41 |
| L | 39 to 41 | 33 to 35 | 42 to 44 |
| XL | 42 to 44 | 36 to 38 | 45 to 47 |
| 2XL | 45 to 47 | 39 to 41 | 48 to 50 |
| 3XL | 48 to 53 | 42 to 47 | 51 to 56 |
| 4XL | 54 to 59 | 48 to 53 | 57 to 62 |
Three sizing rules that save reorders. First, measure hips, not just chest, and size the shorts off the hip number. Second, a high school roster mixes a 14 year old freshman with an 18 year old senior. Order the youth chart (YS to YXL, chest 26 to 37 inches) for the smallest players. A women’s XS is often still too big for them. Third, the jersey hem has to tuck. A slim jersey cut to hang over the belt looks good in a mockup, but under NFHS rules nothing may cover the belt. Tucking is the safe choice, and Georgia requires it. Tell your vendor at the mockup stage that the jersey must tuck into the shorts. Hamco’s shorts page lists inseam changes at no extra cost; ask for the jersey hem length in the same mockup note.
What Is in a Complete Girls Flag Football Uniform (And What It Costs)?
A game day set is a jersey and shorts. The belt, mouthguard, and any headgear are separate purchases that most schools buy in bulk. Here is what the published prices look like in September 2026 for a jersey plus shorts set.
Reading the chart: Hamco’s custom flag football uniform sets start at $89.99 per set for 1 to 24 players. The price drops to $84.99 at 25 to 50, $82.99 at 51 to 100, and $79.99 at 101 or more. Names, numbers, team logo, a 12 hour mockup, and shipping are included. There is no minimum. Wooter Apparel lists its pro jersey plus shorts set at $101.23 for 1 to 9 and $93.35 for 10 to 25. It drops to $89.98 for 26 to 50, $85.48 for 51 to 100, and $78.73 at 101 to 250. So Wooter is a little higher up to 100 sets and a little lower past that. KitBeast sells a girls loose fit jersey plus track shorts set at a flat $55.00. It has a 12 set minimum and about a two week turnaround.
Here is the honest read. If you have 12 or more players and a tight budget, KitBeast is the cheapest published set we found. Check two things before you order it. First, ask whether the track shorts have pockets or an exposed drawstring. Both are illegal under NFHS rules. Second, ask what the price includes. KitBeast lists names and numbers in the design, but the page does not state shipping. Wooter lists names and numbers as optional and does not say whether they are in the set price. Hamco’s set price includes names, numbers, and shipping. If you have fewer than 12 players, KitBeast’s minimum rules it out, and Hamco is the lower published price up to 100 sets.
| Hamco flag football item | 1 to 24 | 25 to 50 | 51 to 100 | 101 or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jersey (sublimated, mesh side panels) | $46.99 | $44.99 | $42.99 | $39.99 |
| Game shorts (pocketless, interior drawstring) | $46.99 | $44.99 | $42.99 | $39.99 |
| Uniform set (jersey and shorts) | $89.99 | $84.99 | $82.99 | $79.99 |
| Compression shorts (pocketless, 9 to 11 in inseam) | $42.99 | $39.99 | $36.99 | $32.99 |
Prices are per piece from each Hamco product page on September 30, 2026, with names, numbers, logo, and shipping included. Belts and mouthguards are not something we sell, so budget those separately at your sporting goods supplier. If you are building a program budget from scratch, our how to start a flag football league guide has the full cost sheet.
Jersey
The fabric that works for flag is light and stretchy, not tackle football mesh. Hamco’s girls flag football jerseys run 140 to 160 GSM four way stretch polyester with mesh side panels. Numbers and logos are sublimated, so they are dyed into the fabric and cannot peel. Ask for the hem length that tucks. Numbers go front and back in a color that contrasts with the jersey body. Georgia teams need the 6 inch front and 8 inch back minimum. Women’s flag football jerseys use the same rules and the same women’s chart.
Shorts
The shorts are where most illegal uniform calls happen. Girls flag football shorts and women’s flag football shorts follow the same rule: no pockets, no belt loops, no exposed drawstring. Hamco’s custom flag football shorts are cut pocketless with an elastic waist and an interior drawstring, which is what the NFHS rule allows. Order them in one solid color that is clearly different from your flag color. A black flag on black shorts is a foul waiting to happen. Many girls prefer compression shorts under or instead of loose shorts, and Hamco makes those pocketless too, with a 9 to 11 inch inseam.
Belt, mouthguard, headgear
Buy three flag belts from a supplier that meets the 1.5 by 14 inch minimum. Pick a flag color that contrasts with the shorts, with no logos on the flags. GHSA and NFL FLAG require a mouthguard, and the NFHS rules book covers tooth and mouth protectors in Rule 1.5.1c. Soft headgear is not in the free NFHS documents, but Georgia requires a Virginia Tech 5 star rated model from fall 2026. More states may follow, so ask your state office before the season. This is the girls flag football gear that no jersey vendor includes, so put it on its own budget line. The rest of the kit, cleats, gloves, and a bag, is on our youth football equipment checklist.
Why Is the 2026/27 Season Different for Girls Flag Football?
Because the sport now has a rules book, a college pathway, and a state map that changes every year. The NFHS map dated August 20, 2026 counts 20 state associations that sanction girls flag football. Five of those 20 start play in 2027: District of Columbia, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Another 17 run independent or pilot programs. That is the 37 the NFHS says will sanction or pilot the sport by next year. Rhode Island announced its sanctioning on August 17, 2026, with its first state championship in spring 2027.
| Season | Girls in high school flag football | Change from prior year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021/22 | 15,716 | First post pandemic survey | NFHS, August 27, 2026 |
| 2022/23 | 20,875 | Up 33 percent (the NFHS release rounds it to 32) | NFHS, August 30, 2023 |
| 2023/24 | 42,955 | Up 105 percent | NFHS, August 20, 2024 |
| 2024/25 | 68,847 | Up 60 percent | NFHS, August 18, 2025 |
| 2025/26 | 102,360 | Up 48.7 percent; 3,990 schools | NFHS, August 27, 2026 |
The college side moved too. In January 2026 the NCAA added flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program across all three divisions. A sport needs at least 40 varsity schools to be considered for an NCAA championship. The NCAA said as many as 60 schools could play in spring 2026. The NAIA approved women’s flag football as its 30th championship sport on June 17, 2026. It expects 60 programs in 2026/27, up from 35 programs when the NAIA made it an invitational sport in 2025, and the first national championship is set for spring 2027.
What this means for your order: a senior on your team may be recruited off game film in 2026/27. Clear numbers, a tucked jersey, and a legal belt are not just rule items. They are how a college coach reads a player on video.
How Do You Order a Girls Flag Football Uniform Without a Reprint?
- Get your state adoption sheet and your league rules first. Confirm number sizes, flag color, and whether headgear is required.
- Measure every player for chest, waist, and hip, and match hips to the women’s chart. Put the smallest players on the youth chart.
- Pick a shorts color that contrasts with your flags, and keep the shorts one solid color.
- Ask for the tuck length on the jersey and confirm there are no pockets, belt loops, or exposed drawstrings on the shorts.
- Approve the mockup on a printed sheet, not a phone screen. Check number size and contrast at real scale.
- Order at least four weeks before your first game. Hamco’s published delivery time is 3 weeks from mockup approval. Wooter publishes 3 to 4 weeks and KitBeast about 2 weeks.
Two positions need extra attention. Quarterbacks and rushers move the most, so their jerseys ride up first. Order those two players a size that tucks with room to spare. Our flag football positions guide explains the 7v7 lineup if you are new to the sport. And if the team still needs a name before the numbers go on, our flag football team names list has 300 of them.
What Hamco Does Differently for Girls and Women’s Flag Teams
We make flag uniforms in our own factory. Our shorts page lists inseam changes at no extra cost, and custom sizing between standard sizes is available on every flag product. Ask for the jersey hem length you need in the mockup note. Every order gets a free mockup within 12 hours, unlimited revisions, and no minimum. A 9 player club team pays the same per piece as any other 1 to 24 order. Names, numbers, and logos are sublimated, not printed on top, so nothing peels through a season of belt pulls. Start on our custom flag football uniforms page and tell us it is a girls or women’s team. We will size the mockup on the women’s chart from the first draft. That covers women’s flag football gear for club and college teams too.
What we do not do: we do not sell flag belts, mouthguards, or headgear. And we will not tell you a jersey that hangs over the belt passes the NFHS coverage rule. Ask for the tuck.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do girls wear for flag football?
A numbered jersey that tucks in. Shorts or leggings with no pockets, belt loops, or exposed drawstrings. A three flag belt that contrasts with the shorts, a mouthguard, and cleats that meet your league’s rule (GHSA and NFL FLAG ban metal). Georgia also requires Virginia Tech 5 star rated soft headgear from fall 2026.
Are girls flag football uniforms different from boys’ uniforms?
The rules are the same. The fit is not. A women’s cut has a larger hip measurement than chest, so the shorts fit at the hip and the jersey stays tucked. A unisex jersey is a men’s cut with a new label.
Can girls wear leggings or compression shorts in flag football?
Yes, as long as they have no pockets or exposed drawstrings, are one solid color, and contrast with the flags. Nothing may cover the belt.
How much do girls flag football uniforms cost in 2026?
Published jersey plus shorts sets run from $55 per player (KitBeast, 12 set minimum) to $101.23 per player (Wooter, 1 to 9 sets). Hamco sets run $89.99 down to $79.99 with numbers and shipping included and no minimum. Belts and mouthguards are extra.
Do girls flag football players have to wear a mouthguard or headgear?
GHSA and NFL FLAG rules require a mouthguard, and the NFHS rules book has a tooth and mouth protector rule (1.5.1c). Soft headgear is not in the free NFHS documents, but Georgia requires soft shell headgear or a headband with a Virginia Tech 5 star rating from fall 2026. Check your state adoption sheet.
