The three wrestling singlet materials you will see in 2026 are nylon spandex (shiny tricot, stock singlets, about 200 GSM), sublimated polyester spandex (custom team singlets, 220 to 240 GSM), and heavy micropoly spandex (about 300 GSM, the thickest compression weight). Compression is a fit and a weight, not a separate material. Published prices run from $46.99 to $54.99 for a Hamco custom sublimated singlet to $74 to $84.50 for Matman and Cliff Keen custom singlets. No rule book specifies a fabric; NFHS, NCAA and USA Wrestling rules control cut, coverage and color.

Pick the wrong wrestling singlet material and you find out in January. Leg bands bag out, a logo cracks at the hip, or a light colored singlet turns see through when a wrestler bridges. Pick the right one and nobody thinks about it all season, which is the point. This guide explains what singlet fabric is made of and what the three fabrics on the market do differently. It shows what the makers publish about weight and price, and what the rule books do and do not say about material. If you are new to the sport and need the basics first, our wrestling singlet guide explains what a singlet is and the rules behind the cut.

One honest note. There is a lot written about singlet fabric that nobody can back up: compression numbers in mmHg, fatigue reductions, antimicrobial claims, smart textiles. We removed all of it from this guide. Every wrestling singlet materials spec below comes from a maker’s product page or a rule book, and where a maker does not publish a number, we say so. Washing is where most singlets die early, so read the how to wash a wrestling singlet guide before the first tournament.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What is a wrestling singlet made of?

The three wrestling singlet fabrics on the market in 2026

1. The base fiber is nylon or polyester, which gives strength, color and the surface feel. The second fiber is spandex, also called elastane, and sold under brand names like Lycra. Spandex is a polyurethane fiber invented at DuPont in 1958 that stretches to about five times its length and snaps back, per Wikipedia. A singlet uses 8 to 20 percent of it; the rest is the base fiber. Wikipedia’s singlet entry describes the garment as one piece and tight fitting, usually spandex or nylon, so that an opponent cannot grab it and the referee can see the body clearly. That is the whole design brief, and fabric choice is about doing it for a full season.

What to look at

Why it matters on the mat

Typical range

Where it is published

Base fiber

Nylon takes solid dye and feels silkier; polyester is what team sublimation bonds to, so printed custom graphics need polyester

Nylon or polyester

Product page fiber content

Spandex percentage

More spandex, more stretch and recovery; also more heat sensitivity in the dryer

8 to 20 percent

Product page, written as 92/8, 82/18 and so on

Fabric weight

Heavier knits are more opaque and more durable; lighter knits breathe and dry faster

About 200 to 300 GSM (5.9 to 8.8 oz per square yard)

Some makers publish it, some do not

Knit type

Tricot knit is shiny and smooth; interlock knit is matte and holds sublimation

Tricot or interlock

Rarely published; visible in photos

Seams

Flatlock seams lie flat against skin and do not dig in during ground work

Flatlock or overlock

Product page

Decoration

Sublimation dyes the polyester; tackle twill, embroidery and screen print sit on top and can crack or pucker on stretch knit

Sublimation on polyester; dye only on nylon

Product page

The three wrestling singlet fabrics on the market in 2026

1. Nylon spandex tricot: the classic stock singlet

The shiny solid color singlet most people picture is nylon spandex tricot, usually about 80 percent nylon and 20 percent spandex. Matman’s stock Timeless singlet is listed as 82 percent nylon, 18 percent spandex, 5.9 ounces per square yard, which converts to about 200 GSM, at $48.00, per the Matman product page. Strengths: silky feel, deep solid colors, the lightest weight of the three, and the best stretch to weight ratio. Limits: nylon does not take team sublimation, so graphics have to be sewn or printed on top. A 200 GSM tricot in a light color is also the fabric most likely to go sheer at full stretch. It is a strong choice for solid color club or practice singlets and for freestyle red and blue sets where there is no graphic to print.

2. Polyester spandex interlock: the custom sublimated singlet

This is the fabric behind almost every custom team singlet with a printed design. Polyester bonds with sublimation dye, so the colors, logo and numbers are inside the fiber instead of on top of it. Hamco’s custom wrestling singlet is a 92 percent polyester, 8 percent spandex compression knit at 220 to 240 GSM. It has flatlock seams at the shoulder, leg opening and inseam, and every singlet gets an opacity test at full stretch under LED light at quality check. Cliff Keen’s sublimated Template 18 is listed as 100 percent Compression Gear Lycra on pick and pill resistant polyester sublimation fabric, with no weight published, at $84.50 per the Cliff Keen page. Strengths: permanent graphics, a matte finish that hides sweat, and a mid weight that balances opacity and breathability. It is also the lowest published custom price in this guide at $54.99 for 1 to 24 and $46.99 at 101 plus. Limits: less stretch than a 20 percent spandex tricot, and the lower spandex content means fit depends more on correct sizing.

3. Heavy micropoly spandex: the compression weight singlet

The third fabric is the same polyester spandex idea at a much heavier weight. Matman’s sublimated Freedom singlet and its Custom Standard Cut are listed as 82 percent micropoly, 18 percent spandex at 8.8 ounces per square yard, about 298 GSM. They are $74.00 and $76.00 per the Freedom and Custom Standard Cut pages. Strengths: the most opaque and the firmest compression feel of the three, and the highest spandex content in a polyester base. Limits: the heaviest and warmest fabric and the highest published price. It is also more fabric for a wrestler cutting weight to carry on the scale, since USA Wrestling allows no weight tolerance for the singlet at weigh in.

Compression deserves one more sentence, because the old version of this guide treated it as a fourth material. It is not. Compression is a fit cut small and a fabric heavy enough to hold that fit. Every singlet above is a compression garment by that definition. Claims of medical grade pressure in mmHg or a percentage drop in muscle fatigue are not published by any singlet maker, so we do not repeat them.

How do the three wrestling singlet materials compare?

Fabric

Example and published spec

Weight

Published price per singlet

Best for

Nylon spandex tricot

Matman Timeless, 82/18 nylon spandex, stock colors

5.9 oz, about 200 GSM

$48.00

Solid color club and practice singlets, freestyle red and blue sets, lightest feel

Polyester spandex sublimated

Hamco custom team singlet, 92/8 poly spandex, flatlock seams, opacity tested

220 to 240 GSM

$54.99 (1 to 24) to $46.99 (101 plus), names, numbers and shipping included

Custom school, club and youth team singlets with printed graphics

Polyester spandex sublimated

Cliff Keen Template 18, 100 percent Compression Gear Lycra on polyester sublimation fabric

Not published

$84.50

Programs already on the Cliff Keen catalog

Heavy micropoly spandex

Matman Freedom (made in USA) and Custom Standard Cut, 82/18 micropoly spandex

8.8 oz, about 298 GSM

$74.00 and $76.00

Wrestlers who want the firmest, most opaque fabric and accept the weight and price

Nylon spandex tricot, stock

Cliff Keen Collegiate stock full back singlet, 100 percent Compression Gear Lycra

Not published

$25.00 on sale from $50.00 on October 2, 2026

Budget stock singlet while sizes last

<metadata>
  <rdf:RDF xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#">
   <cc:Work>
    <dc:type rdf:resource="http://purl.org/dc/dcmitype/StillImage"/>

    <dc:format>image/svg+xml</dc:format>

     <cc:Agent>
      <dc:title>Matplotlib v3.10.9, https://matplotlib.org/</dc:title>
     </cc:Agent>

   </cc:Work>
  </rdf:RDF>
</metadata>
<defs>
  *{stroke-linejoin: round; Weight and price move together once you leave stock singlets. The 298 GSM Matman custom singlets cost $74 to $76, the 220 to 240 GSM Hamco custom singlet $46.99 to $54.99, and the 200 GSM stock Matman $48. Cliff Keen is not on the chart because it publishes price but not fabric weight, which is worth asking about before a program pays $84.50 a singlet. For the full roster math by order size, our wrestling singlets cost guide runs the numbers.

What do the rule books say about singlet material?

Less than most guides claim. The rules control cut, coverage and color, not fiber. The NFHS 2022/23 wrestling rules changes restate Rule 4.1.1. A one piece singlet is cut no lower in the back or front than the armpits, and under the arms no lower than halfway between armpit and belt line. It is worn over a suitable undergarment that covers the buttocks and groin, and the singlet is school issued. Since the 2017/18 season the NFHS alternate two piece uniform is also legal. It is compression shorts or wrestling shorts with at least a 4 inch inseam that do not reach the knee, plus a form fitted compression shirt that does not cover the elbow and has at least a 3 inch tail, both school issued. Female wrestlers wear a sports bra that completely covers the breasts under either uniform.

USA Wrestling adds color, not fabric. Its rule book section 8.2 allows predominantly red or predominantly blue singlets for freestyle and Greco. A singlet mimicking the UWW scheme is also allowed, with three 7 cm bands (two leg bands and one across the upper back) in Pantone 2347C red or 299C blue. Folkstyle singlets can be any colors. Under UWW rules no shorts, leggings or sleeves may show under the singlet, and there is no weight tolerance for the singlet at weigh in. For the 16U and Junior Nationals in Fargo, males must wear a high cut and two piece uniforms are not allowed, per the USA Wrestling event uniform page. So the rules answer the material question only indirectly. Whatever you buy must stay opaque and in place under those cuts, which is why fabric weight matters more than any marketing word on the label.

Which wrestling singlet material should your team order?

Program

Pick this fabric

Why

Youth club (6 to 14)

Polyester spandex sublimated, 220 to 240 GSM

Kids outgrow singlets before they wear them out, so a mid price custom singlet with printed numbers is the sensible spend. If it does, the base fiber has to be polyester, because team sublimation dye bonds with polyester and standard sublimation does not work on nylon. On a stretch knit the alternatives all have a cost. Sewn on tackle twill cracks at the stitch lines and sits in contact with the opponent during ground work. Embroidery puckers on stretch fabric. Screen print chips off through tournament wash cycles. Hamco’s singlet page lists all four methods and explains why sublimation is the one it recommends on a singlet. For how the process works, see our what is sublimation printing guide. Under a singlet, Hamco’s compression shorts are 180 GSM stretch interlock, and the short sleeve compression top is 180 GSM poly spandex with an anti microbial finish. The singlet fabric itself carries no anti microbial treatment, which the old version of this guide got wrong.

Care by material: what the makers say

Fabric

Maker’s published care

What that means for a season

Nylon spandex (Cliff Keen Compression Gear Lycra)

Machine wash warm separately, no bleach, tumble dry low, do not iron

Heat is the enemy of spandex; the maker still allows warm wash and low tumble, so follow the label rather than folklore

Polyester spandex sublimated (Hamco)

Rinse in cold water within two hours if the singlet absorbed mat sanitizer; sublimation handles weekly mat cleaner exposure for a season

Mat sanitizer and chlorhexidine residue are the real fade risk, not the washing machine

Any fabric

Wash inside out, cold, hang dry, no fabric softener (general guidance in our wash guide)

Softener coats polyester and kills wicking; the dryer shortens spandex life

How much do wrestling singlet materials cost?

Here is the honest range, from published pages on October 2, 2026. A stock nylon spandex singlet is $48.00 at Matman and $25.00 on sale at Cliff Keen. A custom sublimated polyester spandex singlet is $54.99 at 1 to 24 pieces and $46.99 at 101 plus from Hamco. That includes names, numbers, a free mockup in 12 hours, free US shipping and no setup fee, with 3 week production from mockup approval per the refund and production policy. Matman’s heavy micropoly custom singlets are $74.00 and $76.00 and Cliff Keen’s sublimated Template 18 is $84.50, before any team pricing those makers quote off the page. Compression is a cut and a weight, not a label to pay extra for, and the rule books care about coverage and color, not fiber.
