The rules book is sold, not posted free, but the NFHS shares its 2026\/27 <a href=\"https:\/\/a-us.storyblok.com\/f\/1022696\/x\/64ff08dcfa\/2026-27-nfhs-flag-football-rules-changes-final-may-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules changes<\/a> and a rules presentation that state associations post. The <a href=\"https:\/\/asaa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flag-NFHS-Rules-26-27-Modified-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2026\/27 NFHS flag football rules presentation<\/a> on the Alaska association&#8217;s site quotes the uniform rules below.<\/p>\n\n<ol><li>Shorts, pants, or skirts: no pockets of any type, no exposed drawstrings, no belts, no belt loops. One single solid color that clearly contrasts with the flags (Rule 1.5.1d).<\/li>\n<li>Flag belt: three flags, one on each hip and one at the tailbone, each at least 1.5 inches wide and 14 inches long. Flags are one solid color. No school or manufacturer logo on the flags or belt (Rule 1.5.1f).<\/li>\n<li>Coverage: no clothing and no hair may cover the flag or belt. This is a 2026\/27 point of emphasis, so officials are told to watch for it.<\/li>\n<li>Tooth and mouth protector: it may not carry attachments that do not protect the teeth or mouth (Rule 1.5.1c).<\/li>\n<li>Eye shade: solid stroke only. Words, numbers, logos, or symbols in eye black are illegal (Rule 1.5.3c).<\/li>\n<li>Penalty for an illegal flag or flag belt: 10 yards from the previous spot and disqualification of the head coach (Rule 9.8).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p>Your state can adopt its own options. Georgia is one example. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.net\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/flag-football\/2026_GHSA_Girls_Flag_Football_Rules_Book.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2026 GHSA girls flag football rules book<\/a> requires front numbers at least 6 inches tall and back numbers at least 8 inches. Jerseys must be long enough to stay tucked for the whole down. A mouthpiece is required. New for fall 2026, every player must wear soft shell protective headgear or a protective headband, and it must carry a 5 star safety rating from the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.net\/flag-football-approved-headgear-requirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GHSA approved headgear requirement<\/a> page. Local news reports that a team with players not wearing approved headgear is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrdw.com\/2026\/07\/30\/ghsa-mandates-protective-headgear-girls-flag-football\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flagged 10 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helmet.beam.vt.edu\/flag-football-helmet-ratings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia Tech flag football headgear ratings<\/a> list the models that pass. Georgia also allows one logo of up to 2.5 by 2.5 inches on a flag. Ask your state office for its adoption sheet before you approve a mockup.<\/p>\n\n<p>Youth rec leagues under <a href=\"https:\/\/nflflag.com\/coaches\/default\/flag-football-rules\/flag-football-equipment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL FLAG rules<\/a> are simpler. NFL FLAG asks for shorts without pockets so the belt stays visible, bans metal cleats, and lists the mouthguard as the only protective gear. First, measure hips, not just chest, and size the shorts off the hip number. Second, a high school roster mixes a 14 year old freshman with an 18 year old senior. Order the youth chart (YS to YXL, chest 26 to 37 inches) for the smallest players. A women&#8217;s XS is often still too big for them. Third, the jersey hem has to tuck. A slim jersey cut to hang over the belt looks good in a mockup, but under NFHS rules nothing may cover the belt. Tucking is the safe choice, and Georgia requires it.
